holiday一般指法定假日（英语称为bank holiday），vacation一般指寒暑假等空闲的假期。尽管很多情形go on vacation与take a holiday可以通用，但在比较严格的场合还是有所区别的，比如某人在享受公司给予的非法定节假日的休假，就要说He is on vacation.严格的讲就不宜说成He is taking a holiday.
